Because of its high altitude, excellent climate, and lush surroundings, Highlands soon became the destination of choice for Southerners from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi who longed to escape the humid heat of their land.
As time moved on, progress came to the town. Inns, churches, and homes were built, a number of which still stand today and are on the National Register of Historic Places.
